I just was reading the comments from my "Frustrated" post yesterday and you all are the best! It is so appropriate that the day before Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) I see even more than ever what a great group of friends you all are! Thank you so much. It means the world to me to hear that sewing is, in fact, difficult, and that it will come in time. Please don't let this post discourage you from adding your thoughts to the other one yesterday if you haven't already commented, but I can tell you I feel sooooo much better already reading the comments. My heart is so warmed by the encouragement and it really has helped already. I won't be giving up!! I really haven't been doing this that long, so I really need to be more patient and less tough on myself. That perfectionist tendency of mine is such a double-edged sword. It can be really helpful sometimes, but very much an impediment other times.
Thank you again - for those of my friends in the U.S. who celebrate Thanksgiving, as well as all my other great friends from around the world - please know how thankful I am this year for each of you.
And I am thankful for your friendship too!
You ALWAYS encourage and lend me a helping "knit" hand.
Have a glorious and blessed Thanksgiving!!

Happy Thanksgiving, Robin. Your blog is awesome!

I completely agree with everyone's comments from yesterday. I know how frustrating it is when you don't excel at something right from the start, and it's so much easier to just drop it altogether. I think that the sewing skills will come with practice, and the samples will definitely help with that. And, if sewing the zipper in before the facing works better for you, then sew the damn zipper in before the facing!! Everyone has methods that work better for them, and you just need to figure out what you like best. I had one teacher that refused to stitch in the ditch to tack down facings. She would make little "x" stitches on either side of the side seams for tacking. So, since I was new, that's what I did too. What a freakin waste of time!! I would rather poke myself in the eye than do that now! LOL. Happy Thanksgiving to you too! I'm thankful that we met this year and that we can share (and sometimes vent about) our projects! :)

Oh, good. It was sad hearing how frustrated you were. I dislike that feeling intensely, and have constructed my life so that 95% of my feelings are, in fact, frustration!
So lots of fellow-feeling.

What a nice post, Robin. I know how you feel about blogger friends. It is amazing how you get so much support and encouragement from people you have never met. Your last post reminded me how it felt when I started knitting....so frustrating at times but it is so worth working through it.
Have a great Thanksgiving!

hi Robin,
I'm so glad to hear that you are not giving up on sewing! I have been a little "under the weather" so I missed yesterdays post! But I definately agree with everyone else, you are way too talented and you can do this! It sounds like the sub was less than supportive. My mom has always had a talent for basically "doing her own thing" with a pattern if it's not working out. Which completely freaked me out when I started sewing! WHAT! You want me to change it? I'd say, but the pattern says.... But finally one day it did click for me, and I realized that I needed to look at what I was sewing from a different viewpoint. and knowing that there are probably several ways of doing a technique, and the pattern just gives one way. Kindof like when the pattern on most tops says to stitch the side seam first, then put in the sleeve. What a pain, so my mom's always told me to put in the sleeve, then stitch under the sleeve and down the side seam all at once. much easier.
sewing on a time limit always stresses me out, and then I don't really enjoy what I'm doing. I can't tell you how many times I have wanted to quit sewing. Usually a "time out" works wonders! some have been longer than others! :) You can do it, besides, you inspire me! Hang in there!
Hope you had a great Thanksgiving!

Random thoughts -
1. Sewing is hard. I can't sew and I have tried several times to learn. Of course, I can't draw a straight line either...
2. There was a time when your knitting was difficult and you were afraid to try cables or bobbles! Now you look at a bobble and scoff and you can cable in your sleep.
3. Someday you will look at these sewing techniques and scoff at them too!
Happy T-day and good shopping!

Sorry I missed so many posts. Sounds like you're just being too hard on yourself. What really struck me a sensible, is for you to get back to those samples. I think our first instinct is to stop something that brings us displeasure, especially if we volunteered for it in the first place. Just keep practicing and stay in that place that brought you here to begin with. You'll be fantastic at it!

Happy Thanksgiving Robin! Glad to hear you were cheered up by all your blog friends yesterday :) Hooray! And speaking of giving thanks, if you take a peek at my blog, you'll see something special that might just cheer you up a little more. Thanks for everything and hope your holiday was amazing!!

Oh Robin, you can't be instantly perfect at everything. Allow yourself a learning curve for goodness sake. You'll get there in time. ;)

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you had a good day with family and friends and were able to take your mind off things a bit.
I don't know very much about sewing, so what I'm about to say may not be relevant. But, it sounds like your teacher taught you to do the opposite of what the pattern directed, and then wasn't in class herself the night you needed help with that. I am always nervous when I'm learning a new technique and the person teaching me starts out with the modification before I grasp the basic concept...it means I'm going to struggle with that forever after because the directions are written for people who have learned to do that technique in the conventional way. I hope this makes sense.
Don't give up -- I think you're doing great so far and it's just a bump in the road to learning. Have your teacher explain again or take her the samples you're struggling with and maybe she can help you before/during/after class. We all know you can do it!!
